The Settings tab is where you can adjust the various backup options, including which folders to include and which type of files to exclude.

The General tab allows the name of the computer to be changed, adjust the time before Crashplan starts warning you about not having recent backups and how often it is run.

Here, you can also set the number of minutes before Crash Plan assume you’re away. This allows the application to use more power to perform faster backups when you’re not using it without slowing the computer when you need it most.

Cick Save to store these changes.

The Backup tab is where you can choose exactly which files and folders to include in the backup. Click on Change Selection to open a file browser and place a tick mark next to each folder you wish to include in the backup.

You can also enter details of files that you wish to exclude; such as large audio or video files. Just enter the file extension and click on the add button.

Common media formats include:

  • mp3
  • m4a
  • mov
  • m4v
  • wav

The time period in which a backup is made and how many versions of a file to keep can also be changed. This is useful if you want backups to be made very frequently or if you wish to revert back to a previous version of a file.

Additionally, you can choose to permanently remove deleted files or keep them.

Advanced backup options can be set by pressing the Configure button. Here you can disable compression and encryption for speed, at the expense of your files taking more space, and stored in a less secure manner. We recommend you leave all these options enabled.

The Account tab shows your personal account information, as well as an option to change your password.

24_Picture_4

In the Security tab you can set an additional passwords to secure the application and the data files.
The first allows you to prevent unauthorised users from modifying your backup settings.
The second allows you to keep your data private, even if your main account password has been compromised.
Please note, if you forget or lose a private data password, separate to your account, there is no way to recover the password or the data.

The Network tab allows you to control the amount of network bandwidth your backups take – it is split between when the user is away and when the user is present.

You may wish to change this if you find the backups are affecting your Internet browsing and downloading speeds. However, this also means that your backups will take longer to complete.

The TCP packet TOS (Type of Service) is an advanced feature allowing you to determine the priority of the backup/restore data going in and out of your computer.

  • Low – minimise delay (fastest)
  • Normal
  • Reliability – maximise reliability
  • Throughput – maximise throughput
